The Annual Raid EDHEC Attracts National Participation

Published on June 30, 2006

participants check-inEDHEC students organized their annual raid  (a mountain rally on foot) which has been one of the biggest high level sports events of its kind in France for more than a decade.

This year the Raid EDHEC took place from 24 to 28 May. For 5 days, 32 teams competed in the wonderful mountainous region, in the back lands of Nice. The participants had to compete in various activities such as mountain biking, orienteering, canoeing and rafting. The list of teams included winners of national competitions, students and professionals.

The competition is organized by the students' association EDHEC Aventures that was created in 1994. Each year around 40 students work hard for the Raid EDHEC to continue the tradition of a successful and well-known event. They are divided into several groups to prepare the event. They are responsible for planning the competition, choosing the route (a closely guarded secret until the start of the competition) and taking care for all the logistics and administrative problems. Organizing the Raid EDHEC is a big challenge. For example, the association must organise the transport of materials and of hundreds of people involved (participants, volunteers, doctors) under difficult conditions. Other groups in the association are responsible for finding the funds for the competition through sponsors that provide either their financial aid or useful products, such as supplies for the participants.

In addition the members of the association are responsible for the promotion of the event in the media and through events such as the special exhibition for the protection of Heritage and Environment in Beaulieu-sur-Mer that was held on the last day of this year's raid. EDHEC students and sponsors offered the numerous visitors and spectators free animations such as kayaking and the opportunity to buy regional produce in a traditional market, set up for the event.

Earlier this year (3-5 March) the association organized the Challenge EDHEC, a competition similar to the Raid and reserved exclusively for EDHEC students.
