Master of Science in Accounting & Management Control

EDHEC's MSc in Accounting and Management Control

A programme to match the needs of international business

Recent research* has proven that despite the numerous job offers in Management Accounting, these positions are simply not being filled due to a lack of suitably qualified candidates. With this in mind, it is hardly surprising that programmes in Management Accounting are a popular choice for students seeking to pursue a career as a Financial Controller or Auditor. But with so many schools offering specialist courses in this field, choosing the most suitable programme is not always easy. How does EDHEC differentiate its Accounting programme from the others?

The ideal programme

EDHEC's new MSc in Accounting and Management Control has been devised with the needs of the industry in mind and provides students with knowledge of both operational and strategic accounting and control. When the programme was being drawn up, instead of simply creating a curriculum based on the capacities of each professor, an extensive survey was first carried out on 205 financial controllers and CFO's to find out the skills needed for these positions. The programme was then built around these specific needs.

It became obvious that there is a real need for financial controllers with both technical and soft skills, capable of managing reporting procedures and implementing innovative financial and management accounting solutions but with additional skills such as communication, strategy, project management and human capital management.

The school's close proximity with the technological park of Sophia Antipolis makes the French Riviera campus the ideal setting. It has also allowed the programme manager, Pierre-Laurent Bescos to form professional links with several companies present on the site.

High Quality Research and Active Faculty

The MSc in Accounting and Management Control is attached to the EDHEC Financial Analysis and Accounting Research Centre, specialising in accounting standards and new approaches to valuation. This research centre follows the general research policy of EDHEC Research for Business and carries out high-level academic research in the same way as EDHEC's internationally renowned Risk and Asset Management Research Centre.

Its mission is to develop generally accepted international standards, definitions, methods, and quality criteria on non-financial performance indicators (customer satisfaction, brand equity, human capital, etc.). The researchers identify and document relevant concepts, develop rigorous measurement methodologies and transfer this expertise to businesses.

The great diversity of backgrounds is one of the advantages of the research centre (specialists in financial analysis, accounting and law and researchers from academia or business), and it allows it to take a multi-disciplinary approach to financial analysis: company valuation, impact of IFRS and Solvency II on insurance companies, the impact of IFRS on the valuation and pricing of risk, growing use of fairness opinions, and the status of the outside expert.

The research centre, in tandem with major financial institutions, plans to do substantial work on the themes that account for the bulk of its growth, to validate the quality of this work by having it published in leading journals, and to promote constant dialogue with practitioners by organising regular conferences and writing press releases in response to current events.

Professor Bescos was recently invited to give a conference in Toulouse for CFOs entitled Strategic Alignment, creating synergies via the trend chart forecast and co-authored the article Characteristics of Performance Measures for External Reporting with other EDHEC faculty Eric Cauvin, Christel Decock and Anders Westlund. This article appeared in Total Quality Management & Business Excellence Review, 2007.

Company Sponsors Aid Recruitment

Concerned with facilitating students' entry into professional life, all of EDHEC's programme managers play an active role in helping students integrate the best positions upon completion of their degree. The MSc in Accounting and Management Control Programme Director, Pierre-Laurent Bescos has organised a sponsorship committee with well-known businesses such as PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Façonnable whose leaders have agreed to play an active role in the programme.

This sponsorship committee helps the programme manager define course content, ensuring that it matches the needs of business as closely as possible.  It will also be involved in the courses in various ways such as by providing testimonials, actively participating in courses and supervising students' Master Theses etc in close collaboration with the programme manager. Another aim of the sponsorship committee and one which is particularly noteworthy is to facilitate students' access to professional life by offering specific internship and recruitment opportunities to graduates of this programme.

Professional organisations are expected to join the sponsorship committee too and negotiations are also currently underway with international firms, in particular within DFCG (National Association of Financial Managers and Management Control, member of the IAFEI (International Association of Financial Executives Institutes).

Industry-Related Course Example

Mr André Kaiser, CFO of Façonnable and member of the sponsorship committee has devised a particularly interesting module that he will teach on Cross Communication and the Function of the CFO which will develop the compulsory operational and strategic fundamentals and skills required for the position of CFO in an international environment. The course includes how to deal with tax and legal constraints, establishing and understanding of consolidated financial statements and implementing a comprehensive report.

Solid Basis

The MSc in Accounting and Management Control is the English successor of the popular French programme, the Mastère Specialisé Pilotage et Control de Gestion.  The new programme was redesigned to match today's European higher education regulations and bring it in line with the other international postgraduate courses already offered on EDHEC's campus in Nice. It also now fits well into the framework of the School's new Financial Economics track. Many highly experienced professors and experts who were involved with the Mastère Specialisé, will be teaching in the new MSc in Accounting programme, providing it with a sound basis and allowing the high quality in the classroom to continue.
